Where the Wild Things Are

Title: “Where the Wild Things Are”
Author: Maurice Sendak
Genre: Thriller
Publisher: Harper and Row
Copyright Date: 1963
Pages in Book: 48 pages
Reading Level: K-3

Summary: This is a story of a little boy named Max who gets sent to his room without any dinner. Once in his room, it becomes a completely different world! He sails across the water to a land where the Wild Things live. They “roar their terrible roars and gnash their terrible teeth” but that doesn’t faze Max in the least. They make Max their fearless leader, and have wild rumpus’s. Max soon becomes bored and wishes to go back home despite their begging for him to stay. After sailing back home, he arrives in his room with his dinner waiting for him. And it’s still hot.

Reaction: I think this is such a fun book! The imagination put into it is amazing, and it’s one that almost all children love.

Recommendation: I would probably recommend this to boys more than girls. I feel that boys would make more of a connection to it than girls would. I also think that this book is for children that are either a little past beginning to read because there are some slightly difficult words in there for a kindergartener.

Potential Problems/Conflicts: I didn’t really see any problems with this book. It was well written, and one that all children know and love.
